It’s a common misconception that companies stop hiring during the summer months.
While companies are traditionally slower during the summer, looking for a job during the summer months can actually work to your advantage. Here’s why.
1. There’s less competition
People who assume companies aren’t hiring during the summer aren’t applying or even looking for jobs during the summer months. This gives you an advantage of being one of a smaller pool of candidates for any position you apply to.
Less competition is always good when it comes to finding a job.
2. Hiring managers have more time
The summer months tend to be more relaxed than other months. In addition to more people being out of the office for fun summer-related things like vacations, managers are often working on less critical projects during the summer than they are at the end of the year. This means you’re application is more likely to be seen in a timely manner instead of being shoved at the bottom of the hiring manager’s priority list.
3. It’s easier for you to sneak out to an interview
If you already have a job, you know that getting out of work for an interview can be a challenge. In the summer, when more people are taking time off or are working a flexible schedule, it can be easier for you to escape from the office for a few hours without raising eyebrows.
4. A lot of jobs are available during the summer
Certain types of jobs are more likely to post during the summer than during other times of the year, including:
- Entry-level jobs: Entry-level job openings tend to correlate to graduation, which means there are a lot of entry-level jobs that need to be filled during the summer months. This can be great if you’re a recent college grad, and also if you’re changing careers.
- New positions: New positions need budget approval, which usually happens in Q1. In Q2 and Q3, hiring managers have the approval they need to move forward with the hiring process, which means by summer they’re actively and eagerly looking to fill these new positions.
- Replacements: Turnover tends to happen after bonuses are paid out, which can vary from company to company. By Q3, though, bonuses have paid out, so any employees who were only sticking around to collect will be gone and companies will be actively looking to replace them.
5. Networking is easier in the summer
It can be easier to grab coffee with someone in your network to talk about your job search during the summer than during busier times of the year. Summer also tends to be a more social time of year, with barbecues, pool parties, and golf outings. Take advantage of any social situation that comes your way to broaden your network.
