Searching for a job when living abroad does not have to be an intimidating process. In fact, your ability to secure a job depends more on your mindset than the specific tools you possess. Below is a ten step guide for expats and skilled migrants who want to find their dream jobs.
1) Develop a positive mindset. Believing that you can find your dream job is 80 percent of the job search battle. Do not allow yourself to listen to any internal voices telling you that you do not have the skills or expertise to succeed on the job search trail. Draw upon the positive reinforcement provided by your family and friends, as it can help you maintain an upbeat attitude during the job application process.
2) Learn the cultural norms of the society where you are living. Pay special attention to cultural expectations regarding employment. For instance, workers who move to Mexico from a country such as Germany or the Netherlands can expect to work significantly longer hours than they worked in their countries of origin.
3) Make a point to engage with people from your new community. Do not allow yourself to become isolated, as isolation can be counterproductive to your job search. Whenever possible, customize your CV to reflect your ability to fulfill the requirements of the positions you are exploring. Make sure you have your CV screened for formatting and grammatical errors before you begin distributing it to employers.
8) Arrive on time and dress appropriately for your interviews. Avoid wearing dirty or torn clothing and refrain from using excessive makeup or perfume/cologne. When your interview is scheduled, ask whether you need to wear any protective clothing or shoes. Make transportation arrangements in advance and allow plenty of time for potential traffic delays.
9) Always remember to follow up with hiring managers following your interviews. You will stand out from other job seekers if you follow up with hiring managers after each interview. Be sure to thank the individuals who interviewed you in writing and restate your interest in the jobs for which you applied.
