Here are some tips that can help you make the jump from simply working abroad, to having a real full-fledged and maximized career abroad.
Start with your current job Even small businesses these days can have overseas headquarters. If you have moved country to work, then it might be worthwhile to do some research on the company and find out if they have any open positions or potential careers for you within the company. Working with a company to relocate and stay permanently is much easier than figuring it out by yourself. There are processes and systems in place to make it as easy as possible for their workers.
Learn about your location
Knowing the language, the cultural nuances, the general geography of a place can be a huge advantage when it comes to finding your dream job overseas. If a language barrier is the only thing standing between you and living permanently where you really want to be, then break down that barrier. Companies are always looking for bi-lingual or multi-lingual workers to better work with locals and smooth over deals.
Be aware of local standards
When it comes to your resumé it may seem pretty straightforward, but different countries and regions have different rules for resumés. You don’t need to be tossed aside simply because you were unaware that you had to include your marital status. Do some research or simply ask locals what the customs are and it could get you that one step closer to the career advancement you’re looking for.
Use your network
This is where sites like LinkedIn are your best friends. You may have college friends or family who has recently moved to a company overseas. They are your ticket in. You can get inside information on the country and maybe even a foot in the door at the company where they work. Strengthen your networking skills and never be afraid to ask for a bit of help. Career exploration is an admirable goal to have and these friends of your will understand the drive and struggle you have. Remember that this is a two-way system and you should be willing to help others too.
Goal Setting is essential
You need to make a plan for what you want to do. Being vague here will get you nowhere. Employers will want to know exactly how long you intend to stay and if you don’t know the answer they aren’t as likely to hire you. If you want to live permanently there and build a life and career there, make a set of goals and stick to them. Have a timeline that you can discuss with potential employers for what you wish to achieve in a year, two years, or five year period. Your organization and drive will impress employers and show them that you are serious about leaving your home country and becoming a loyal employee.
